On 5th February, 1915, the 3rd Worcestershire, of 7 Brigade, 3rd Division left their billets at Locre and moved into trenches east of Kemmel where they remained for the next four days. The battalion diary recorded very little of their time here so there is no information concerning the death of Frederick Holland who was killed on 6th February. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries.
